How do we get people cycling?

Many short trips (under 1 km) are taken by car in Bayside and we are keen to shift some of this to sustainable modes of transport such as cycling. To do this we need to promote cycling and its benefits to the community.  Many ideas have been identified, such as:

    • Schools, community groups and local events
    • Social media
    • Smart phone apps
    • Producing a wide range of information about cycling and making it easily available in places like Council's website
    • Celebrating new and improved bike infrastructure
    • Cycle maps
    • Bike maintenance classes and riding lessons
    • ....Read more

Which of these ideas do you like and why?  Which ones do you think are great and why?  Which ones might need further thought and why?  And most importantly, what great ideas do you have?

Where do we need bicycle parking?

Our aim is to increase the number of people cycling and we realise to do that we need to make "taking the bike" the easy option.  One way to do that is to provide bicycle parking in locations such as popular destinations and adjascent to transport such as train stations.

Where would you like to see new or additional bike parking? Any train stations? Shops? Other destinations?

Once again, please be specific on exact locations (eg. Somewhereville Train Station - on both side of the track).

What bike infrastructure do you think is needed for Bayside?

It's important that bike routes are safe, well connected, convenient, and attractive as well as being well designed and maintained.  Bike infrastructure includes:

    • New/improved on-road cycle lanes
    • New/improved off-road shared paths
    • Improvements at intersections
    • Contra-flow cycle lanes along one way streets

What infrastructure is needed in Bayside?  New lanes?  Improved lanes? New paths?  Where would you like to see them?  Please be specific on the location (eg. Corner of City Street and Beach Lane).
